Indie music is hot, and these bands are on fire. Keep reading to discover the music you should be listening to this year.

Blondfire

This brother-sister duo has an electro-pop vibe that is guaranteed to make you smile and bob your head. Their first full-length album, “Young Heart,” will be released this season, and it inculdes our favorite tune, “Where the Kids Are.”

Cayucas

This band started off as Zach Yudin’s solo project, then became Oregon bike Trails. In 2012, they changed their name to Cayucas, and now they are one of the hottest indie bands on the planet.Check out this link here. The four-piece group will release their first album before summer this year.

Ducktails

Combining early-80s pop sounds with funky guitars, glowing synths, thoughtful lyrics, intense beats and plenty of saxophones, Ducktails will rock your socks off. Check out their single “Letter of Intent.”

The History of Apple Pie

The cloudy, effects-blasted sound of The History of Apple Pie is at once dreamy and sweet. Look for their debut album sometime this summer.

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper

If you love Little Scream and Sharon Van Etten, you will be smitten with Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. Also known as Aly Spaltro, the Beekeeper creates passionate, stark songs filled with whisper-quiet moments and fearless screaming.

There are a lot of music channels you can get with http://www.cable-tv.com/, but do you ever stop and wonder about how some of these mainstream groups got to where they are? It might surprise you to know that some of the biggest stars in music started small. The Beatles took on gigs in various dives around England, Rush toured the local bar and high school dance circuit and even Queen started out as a garage band before becoming as big as they are now.

Those of you reading this might have thought about starting up an indie band or may even have one going. You might be asking “What’s the difference between me and them?”

Plenty, but nothing that should ultimately shove a brick wall in your face. For one, back then, there were not nearly as many outlets to get your work and music out as there are today. You have the internet and you have various sites and services that allow you to display and distribute your music to millions of viewers all over the web.

However, part of moving from indie to mainstream means playing the game. You might think that music the art is more important than the money, but mainstream is all about the money. This is where the two ideals can conflict and you really ought to figure out where your band is going before you make the leap.

Indie is a genre of music that tends to fly slightly under the mainstream of music. Indie music is played by innovative musicians who desire to create a musical sound unlike any other while avoiding the risk of “selling out” or, in other words, signing on with a mainstream music label. Indie music goes back to the roots of music, back when artists used their craft to create masterpieces of sounds as opposed to the over produced, talentless noise sometimes produced by the mainstream music machine. Simply put, indie music is a style of sounds created by people who value creativity over money and popularity.

In recent years, indie music has seen an increase in popularity that has thrust certain “indie” bands into worldwide recognition. Bands like Coldplay, Radiohead and Arcade Fire started their careers as obscure, lesser known artists who created music for the sake of music only to find themselves tossed onto the stages of packed arenas around the world. Indie bands like these three have brought more recognition to a style of music that up until now has thrived on its small fan base and independent releases and good or bad, more people are now aware of this genre of music. For up and coming indie musicians like Da Bears and a variety of others, the influence of big named indie bands and musicians on music lovers around the world is certain to bring future attention to these lesser known indie band’s style of music.

Long ago, music used to be created for the sake of expressing creativity through beautiful sounds and it was mostly discovered through word of mouth. Then along came major record labels that would turn some bands popular while other bands with the same talent remained unknown. It could be argued that major record labels have made it somewhat harder for indie bands to catch a break if the band doesn’t create music that lives up to major record label standards, therefore making it hard for some bands to gain recognition, but with the internet it is now possible to market your own indie band.

With the internet, it is possible for any budding musician to get their sound heard by a large audience of music lovers. Many indie bands have opted to market their music through their own websites or through the use of social media like Facebook and My Space, and they are finding these ways work for getting their music recognized. If you would like to get your music heard by numerous potential fans, all it takes is a little computer savvy to market your own unique blend of indie rock music. By using the internet to market your indie music, it is a guarantee that you will not lose your artistic integrity through the rules often brought on by major record labels and before you know it, your indie band will have millions of fans.

The word “Indie” is shortened form for the word “Independent.” So by definition, any band that strives to make their music independently can be considered Indie. There is a connotation of Indie, however, that is conjured up whenever that particular word is mentioned. “Indie” bands are thought to have a certain sound, (guitar, drums, strings, etc,) that give them distinction in the world of music today. For a band to break out of that “Indie” mold, the key word to consider has to be “Innovation.” If a band looks at the stereotypical “Indie” bands that have come before, and makes a conscious decision to do something different, they can elevate above the previous perceptions and do something different. Every band starts out small, at least initially. Even bands that quickly rose to prominence were, one day, just sitting in their mothers living room trying to figure out what to do. There are millions of bands that do what they think the listeners want to hear. The key for a new band to remember is to remain true to their own vision of music. A band will never be a sellout if they consistently only make music they want to hear.

Being a musician is a dream for many people. There are numerous starving musical artists that are seeking the best ways to get their brand of music “out there” for the public to hear. There are a number of reasons why it is so difficult to break into the music scene. However, when you add the eclectic and often changeable indie scene musical artists can often find themselves a bit perturbed at how they can make a mark and still remain relevant.

True musicians are artists and artists are oftentimes not willing to compromise there talents and craft in order to attract an audience. Most musicians want to be embraced for their natural musical abilities. Thus, remaining relevant in the indie music scene requires a lot of creativity without the feeling of being a “sell out”. Finding a happy medium is necessary for any musical artists that want to create music in a specific genre without compromising their craft and appeal to the public.

In order to remain relevant in the indie scene musicians are urged to try new musical styles that complement their existing craft. Using different instruments or trying a new sound that is authentically interesting can add a fresh breathe of air to an artist’s approach to music. This new sound also keeps the audience on their toes and has them wondering…what’s next?

Indie Rock was once considered a genre for unknown artists that wanted to make music without all the baggage that comes with being signed to a corporate record label. Though this is still true, the genre has seen a steep rise in popularity since the term was coined in the 1980s to refer to bands that approached pop rock music with a do it yourself mentality.

Indie Rock covers a huge range of different musical styles from grunge to lo-fi and beyond. Many bands would create their own record labels with the sole purpose of distributing albums by artists that were not willing to conform to mainstream styles or subject matter. However, many styles that have emerged from Indie Rock have had major impacts on more mainstream music. This is not because the corporate record labels are giving in to these styles, though that has happened to some extent, but rather the fans are finally giving Indie Rock the attention it has worked so hard for. Plenty of modern bands, like Da Bears and Animal Collective, have become respected members of the musical community. These modern Indie groups are becoming the mainstream to a degree. Their influences are changing the meaning of pop music and Indie music alike.
