What Makes a Band More Than Just Indie?
The word “Indie” is shortened form for the word “Independent.” So by definition, any band that strives to make their music independently can be considered Indie. There is a connotation of Indie, however, that is conjured up whenever that particular word is mentioned. “Indie” bands are thought to have a certain sound, (guitar, drums, strings, etc,) that give them distinction in the world of music today. For a band to break out of that “Indie” mold, the key word to consider has to be “Innovation.” If a band looks at the stereotypical “Indie” bands that have come before, and makes a conscious decision to do something different, they can elevate above the previous perceptions and do something different. Every band starts out small, at least initially. Even bands that quickly rose to prominence were, one day, just sitting in their mothers living room trying to figure out what to do. There are millions of bands that do what they think the listeners want to hear. The key for a new band to remember is to remain true to their own vision of music. A band will never be a sellout if they consistently only make music they want to hear.
