Da Bears Rock

Indie Rock was once considered a genre for unknown artists that wanted to make music without all the baggage that comes with being signed to a corporate record label. Though this is still true, the genre has seen a steep rise in popularity since the term was coined in the 1980s to refer to bands that approached pop rock music with a do it yourself mentality.

Indie Rock covers a huge range of different musical styles from grunge to lo-fi and beyond. Many bands would create their own record labels with the sole purpose of distributing albums by artists that were not willing to conform to mainstream styles or subject matter. However, many styles that have emerged from Indie Rock have had major impacts on more mainstream music. This is not because the corporate record labels are giving in to these styles, though that has happened to some extent, but rather the fans are finally giving Indie Rock the attention it has worked so hard for. Plenty of modern bands, like Da Bears and Animal Collective, have become respected members of the musical community. These modern Indie groups are becoming the mainstream to a degree. Their influences are changing the meaning of pop music and Indie music alike.
